One of our favorite food holidays is coming up next Friday, June 3rd – National Donut Day! If you’ve been a reader for a while, you’ve probably noticed that we love our donuts – basing vacations, meetings, and even doctor’s appointments around getting some good donuts! 😉
Since we love getting creative with topping/embellishing our food (we’ve done oatmeal, waffles, grilled cheese, baked potatoes and hot dogs), we thought a donut topping party would be a fun way to celebrate this food holiday. So next Friday, invite some friends over, have donuts, glazes and toppings available and go crazy! We have 9 ideas here to get you inspired!Ice Cream Sundae – a glazed donut topped with a scoop of ice cream (we used vanilla), hot fudge, rainbow sprinkles and a cherry on top!S’mores – a glazed cake donut topped with a marshmallow glaze, melted Hershey bars and graham cracker crumbs! And if you just can’t get enough of donuts and s’mores, you should probably try our other variation on the S’mores Donut!
Marshmallow Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons marshmallow fluff, softened
Mix together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add in softened fluff and stir until completely mixed. Adjust ingredients as needed, more fluff for more marshmallow flavor, more powdered sugar to thicken the glaze, or a little more milk to thin the glaze (it should spreadable but not too drippy).Strawberry Shortcake – a glazed donut topped with crème fraîche whipped cream and macerated strawberries! Based off of our Strawberry Crème Fraîche Pancakes – you can find the recipes for these toppings here.Marshmallow Treasure – a plain cake donut topped with a cereal milk glaze and marshmallows from a favorite childhood cereal!
Cereal Milk Glaze
cereal (we used a mix of Lucky Charms & Fruit Loops, generic brands)
milk
Pour a small bowl of cereal and milk and let sit for about 20 minutes. Once you’ve got some deliciously infused milk, strain and discard cereal and use milk in the recipe below.
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon cereal milk
drop of vanilla extract
crushed fruit loops, optional
Stir together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Add in more powdered sugar to thicken the glaze, or a little more milk to thin the glaze (it should spreadable but not too drippy). If desired, crush up some fruit loops (or marshmallows) to fine crumbs and stir into glaze.Caramel Delight – a take on the much beloved Girl Scout Cookie, these donuts are topped with salted caramel, toasted coconut and drizzled with hot fudge! You can find our salted caramel sauce recipe here.Cookies ‘n Cream – a chocolate glazed donut topped with cream cheese whipped cream and crushed oreos!
Cream Cheese Whipped Cream
4 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 oz. whipped cream
Stir together the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. Fold in the whipped cream – and stir until smooth. (If needed, add in more powdered sugar to thicken).Blueberry Cheesecake – inspired by one of our favorite desserts, Blueberry Cheesecake Pie, a glazed donut is topped with cream cheese whipped cream, blueberry pie filling and graham cracker crumbs! (See above for the recipe for cream cheese whipped cream).Coffee Crisp – based off of my love for coffee and Coffee Crisp candy bars (these might be hard to find in the U.S.; growing up, my parents used to bring these back from Canada when they traveled. For locals, you can find these at Wegmans in the International food aisle), this plain donut is topped with an espresso glaze and pieces of Coffee Crisp candy bar.
Espresso Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk
a pinch or two of espresso powder (or you can sub out the milk for espresso or strong coffee)
Stir together ingredients, add more powdered sugar to thicken the glaze, or a little more milk to thin the glaze (it should spreadable but not too drippy).Maple Bacon – because maple and bacon just go together so well, we couldn’t resist bringing this back again. This plain cake donut is topped with a maple glaze and crumbled bacon! You can find the recipe for the maple glaze here.
A few of our favorites were the Strawberry Shortcake, Ice Cream Sundae and S’mores donuts! What would your favorite donut topping be? Any new suggestions we should try out?
