Tips for Living with Less Waste

I debated with myself whether this was a post I was qualified to really share. I feel like when it comes to living a less-waste lifestyle, there are sooo many areas I could be doing better with. And if you’re not an expert, should you even be sharing it??? Yes. Because sometimes I feel a…

Yes! As a self-proclaimed expert, I love that people are making little steps and sharing them with the world. One thing leads to another, and pretty soon you’ll only take out a mini bag of garbage every two months! I would add that the two biggest contributors to waste (that we personally control and invite) are food waste (and animal product consumption) and packaging waste. Choose unpackaged (use reusable produce/bulk bags, buy from bulk stores), COMPOST, buy locally (those avocados and almonds are wreaking havoc on the bees through pollination and the planet through transport), and eat less animal products. Minimalist Baker has awesome plant-based recipes, as does Hot For Food and A Beautiful Mess 🙂ReplyCancel

Thanks for the encouragement Haley! I’ve just started to compost, and am trying to get it to feel like a regular routine in our home (gotta get the husband and kids on board with all the changes too!). I definitely see the waste in packaging and am trying to work on how I can do better with this in what I buy. We live in a pretty rural area, so bulk stores are few & far between, but I know I can do better in other areas! I love your suggestions – and thanks for the tip on those sites, I’m on a quest to find some easy plant-based recipes that my kids will love that I can throw into our meal planning now & then, so I’ll definitely be checking those out! 🙂ReplyCancel

Here are 2 more suggestions.  I use Bee’s Wrap sandwich wraps to cover cheese or a sandwich, bread, an onion, etc.  It’s easy to wash, is reusable and compostable when it’s time to replace.  Instead of freezing ground beef or chicken in plastic freezer bags, I use freezer paper.  Reynolds makes it and you can find it at Target or Walmart.  It’s easy to write on too.ReplyCancel

I love these ideas Barb! I’ve been thinking I need to try out the bee’s wrap, so I think this is the nudge I need to get to it! And I LOVE the idea of using the freezer paper for meat – so simple and yet I never thought of that! Thanks for the ideas! 🙂ReplyCancel

I love my bees wrap! Only thing I found that makes a half an avocado stay fresh. And I swear the onion half and some sliced I stored in it tasted better after using it then the first onion half did.ReplyCancel

Favorite Modern Vintage Rugs

So a few weeks ago on Instagram I shared about the rug I have in the picture above. It was a Marshalls find that I was wondering where to put – the bathroom was the clear winner for it after everyone voted and that’s where it is now (and I’ve been loving it in there!)….

Modern Vintage for sure.  I bought a similar one to yours at At Home.  The plan was for the bathroom too!  🙂 ReplyCancel
