When we first moved into this house in 2017, we put so much work into it. We started by ripping out gross shag carpet and tearing down walls. Then we got 5 gallon buckets of white paint and covered up the variety of painfully bright colored walls so that we could get things ready to move in. The stairwell is so dark and closed in and none of the stair tread wood matched so we just painted it all white with the walls. It stayed like that for years even though I’ve had a folder since then on my computer of edited images of how I wanted to redo the space once we got settled in. Finally, a couple months ago I decided it was time to get started on the stairwell makeover!
I knew I wanted to keep it mostly neutral with a bit of white to bring some brightness to the tiny space. So I went with a brown paint on a section of the stairwell and added in a runner for a little bit of cushion and to cover up the perpetually dirty stairs. Going up and down the stairs feel SO nice with the runner!
This project took so much longer than expected and tried my patience to no end. Our house was built in the 1800’s and is SO crooked in every place. Trying to paint the walls to look straight almost did me in! The runner took a lot of measuring and adjusting to make sure it went straight up the crazy narrow and steep stairs that vary in width the whole way up. But I did it eventually! Maybe not perfectly – but it’s so homey and cozy and I love it!

That’s so handsome What a great job you did – the pattern in the runner adds visual interest without distracting from the photos on the wall and I bet it does a great job of hiding scuffs and stains. Moreover, the rug provides traction for safety and sound proofing. Brilliant all around. Kudos!
