Hand Painted Flour Sack Kitchen Towels.

In our post yesterday I mentioned that I collect vintage kitchen towels and that sometimes it’s hard to actually put those beauties to work in your kitchen because you don’t want to destroy them! Well, here is a solution for you: hand painted flour sack kitchen towels! They’re easy and very cheap – so no guilt about all the grime getting on them.

What you need:
-Flour sack towel (I got mine at the Dollar Tree for $1 and they make two towels each)
-Fabric paint
-Paint brushes
-Masking tape
-A washable surface (or one that you don’t mind getting painted)
-Sewing machine

-Cut your flour sack squares in half. I would recommend ironing it first.
-Use sewing machine to hem the cut edge with a 1/2″ seam. (Fold 1/2″ and iron and then fold and iron again before sewing to prevent from fraying.)
-Use masking tape to create stripes. You might have to do this in sections depending on what directions you want your stripes to go and how close together you want them. Using a ruler and a pencil to mark out your stripes beforehand will help with straight lines.
-Mix fabric paint with some water. 1 part paint, 2 parts water. Using fabric paint alone will make the colors too harsh on this fabric and you would use a lot of paint.
-To paint the towel, you should dab off most of the liquid from your paint brush onto a napkin before each stroke.
-Remove the tape and repeat for other lines if necessary.
-Let the paint dry for a few hours.
