  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour

Crumble Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, room temperature, cubed

Instructions

Apple Layer:

  1. Preheat oven to 350º.
  2. Grease an 8 or 9-inch baking dish. (Or use a cast iron skillet).
  3. In a medium bowl, combine 4 cups apples*,2 tablespoons flour and 1/4 cup brown sugar.

  4. Mix until apples are thoroughly coated.
  5. Arrange apples in bottom of prepared baking dish.

Crumble Topping:

  1. In a medium bowl (I use the bowl that I mixed the apples in, don’t even bother to clean it!), stir together 1/2 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon & 1/4 teaspoon salt.

  2. With a pastry blender, cut in 1/3 cup unsalted butter, until mixture is crumbly.

  3. Spread topping over apples in an even layer.
  4. Bake uncovered for about 50 minutes, or until topping is golden and apple mixture is bubbly near the middle .
  5. Serve warm with a scoop (or two) of ice cream and salted caramel sauce.

Recipe Notes

* I like to use a variety of apples, but always include some Granny Smith in that variety!

Recipe can be doubled and made in a 9x13 pan.
