DIY Salt Dough Ornaments with Cookie Molds

Last Valentine’s Day, I shared a salt dough heart garland. Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to make these salt dough ornaments using Christmas cookie molds! I love how these turned out and they’re so easy to make!

For these ornaments, I did a mix of regular salt dough and used Caitlin’s gingerbread salt dough recipe she shared a few years ago. (She shares how to make cut out ornaments in that post). These ornaments look great hanging on your tree. They also would make a lovely handmade Christmas gift. Or you can use them to decorate gifts with when wrapping.

I shared a video of how to make these, and you can find the links to the cookie molds I used down below too.

Salt Dough Ornaments

Learn how to make these easy salt dough ornaments using cookie molds.

Ingredients
For Dough:
  • 1-1/4 cups flour, plus a little more as needed
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup water
For Ornaments:
  • cookie molds (see above for links)
  • ribbon or twine
Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, stir together the 1-1/4 cups flour, and 1/2 cup salt.

  2. Gradually add in the 1/2 cup water, a little at a time, stirring after each addition of water, until the dough is able to hold together. You want the dough to be pretty dry, but not crumbling. (You may need to add more water, or more flour, to get the right consistency).

  3. Add a little bit of flour to the cookie mold and brush it in with a pastry brush. Tap out excess flour.
  4. Grab a small piece of dough, roll in a little flour if needed, and press it into the mold, smoothing the back. It should be about even with the height of the mold.
  5. Once the dough is pressed in, bang the mold to release it. You may need to bang it a few times. The dough should come out fairly easy.
  6. Place the ornaments on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Create holes for your ribbon or string to go through, be sure to create a hole large enough for whatever ribbon or string you want to use.
  8. Bake at 200ºF for 2 hours, turning ornaments over half way though.
  9. Ornaments should be hardened. Add ribbon or string to ornaments.
