Homemade Makeup Remover Pads

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been making small changes to try and use more simple, natural (and inexpensive) products around our home. (There’s still sooo many things that I still do use and have that don’t fall into this category, but I figure baby steps, right?) Back in the spring, I was talking with a few friends about make up removers and quite a few them used coconut oil for removing make up. I had some on hand and it seemed quick, easy and cheap enough, plus coconut oil seems to be good for just about everything, so I thought I’d give it a try.
I’m pretty basic with makeup, a little concealer under my eyes, powder to take away shine and mascara. I pretty much just use makeup remover for my eyes and the coconut oil works for me! Normally, I just scoop a tiny bit of coconut oil out of the jar, rub between my fingers to get it to melt and wipe it across my eyes. Then I just wipe my eyes with a washcloth or cotton pad and I’m done. However, I had a few trips planned over the summer and I wanted something easier to carry around than my jar of coconut oil, so I decided to try making some coconut oil makeup remover pads that I could just throw in a baggie and put in my travel bag. I know there’s a lot of different recipes out there similar to this, but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible, so I used only coconut oil. It does harden a bit once it cools, but as soon as I start wiping my eyes, the pads soften and my makeup comes off! Homemade Makeup Remover Pads @themerrythoughtWhat you need:
– coconut oil (I recommend organic, virgin coconut oil)
– cotton rounds
– jar (an 8 oz canning jar will work)

Directions: Place about 15 cotton pads in a small jar. Melt 1/4 cup coconut oil until it’s a liquid and there are no solid lumps (you can do this in the microwave or on the stovetop). Pour the melted oil over the top of the pads. Push down on the pads a few times to soak up as much oil as possible. You can also lift the stack of pads out and flip them over to make sure they are completely saturated with oil.
To use, remove one pad, wipe eyes and you’re done! You can make more in one batch, just increase the amount of oil. I’ve had some in a jar for months (just to see how long they’d last), and they’re still good. (Make sure your jar is airtight!) When using for travel, place your pads in zipper top baggie and you’re good to go!Homemade Makeup Remover Pads @themerrythoughtHomemade Makeup Remover Pads @themerrythoughtHomemade Makeup Remover Pads @themerrythoughtAnd while we’re talking about makeup, here’s a little mascara tip a friend shared with me – add a drop of Lavender Essential Oil to your mascara. I do this and love how it smells – lavender has a relaxing, calming scent to me; so each morning, getting a little scent of lavender while putting on my makeup is so nice! Some say it can also help promote healthier lashes, I love it for the scent! Here’s how I do it: unscrew the brush from the mascara tube, place 1-2 drops Lavender Essential Oil* in the tube, replace brush and swirl the brush around a few times (don’t pump!). Allow to sit overnight before using, it can be pretty strong if you use it right away.
(I’ve been learning a little bit more about essential oils and I’m having fun trying different recipes, but still consider myself a beginner in this area. This tip was one I enjoy and wanted to share!
