DIY Pre-Shave Oil

DIY Pre-Shave Oil @themerrythoughtIt’s so hard for me to think of any gifts to make my dad for Father’s Day. It doesn’t help that it comes right after his birthday so any creative thing I’ve thought of, I gave to him the week before! Or I procrastinate so long on getting/making his birthday gift that it just becomes a Father’s Day gift… sorry, Dad!

Here’s a super simple gift that you can whip up for Father’s Day that he can use all the time! Pre-shave oil is a great homemade alternative to shaving gel and helps leave your skin silky smooth.
DIY Pre-Shave Oil @themerrythought There are a million different ways to make pre-shave oil and you may have to change the recipe based on how your skin reacts to these oils. I looked up tons of different recipes before making mine and I decided to go with a pretty basic recipe…

1 part grapeseed oil
1 part olive oil
A few drops of an essential oil of choice (I’d suggest sandalwood or cedarwood – or check out this list for what will work best for your skin)

Experiment with different types of carrier and essential oils if this mix doesn’t work for you!
DIY Pre-Shave Oil @themerrythoughtLadies – you can use this too! I’ve heard it’s incredible for shaving your legs! If you’re curious about essentials oils we use, you can learn more here.

This is a gorgeous gift! I wish that I could make something like this for my husband, but he is growing out a huge beard right now. Do you have any suggestions for beard oil?

Thanks, Emory! It seems like beard oils are basically the same kind of deal. You need a carrier oil like grapeseed oil, almond oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil (or a mix of them) and then you can add in essential oils as desired. You could simply take the olive oil out of the recipe above or substitute one of the other oils in and it would work just fine!

To use it, he will just use a couple drops in the palm of his hand and work it through his beard then groom as usual.

      Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

Love this idea! I really despise shaving but I think this oil will help in the irritated skin department. Plus, it’ll be a fun treat to share with my boyfriend. Thanks, Caitlin!

hmmm… for a ladies scent, you could try lemongrass which would also help repel mosquitos too. (double duty)ReplyCancel

Is this a preshave or post shave oil (both, maybe?). if it is preshave, does one use a regular shaving cream after application of the shave oil or does one use the shave oil as a substitute for shaving cream?ReplyCancel

Sorry, that was partly a stupid question. The title is for a preshave oil. But the rest of the questions still stands–is this a substitute for shaving cream or prep for using shaving cream?ReplyCancel

It can be used both ways depending on preference. Some people use the oil alone and love it and others prefer to use the oil before adding shaving cream for the extra protection and moisture that it offers compared to shaving cream alone.ReplyCancel

    Thanks for posting this recipe.
It will work duel duty, one for my legs, and now that I read the replies, especially from Peter and Emory, my husband can use it to groom his beard!
I’m pinning this to my essential oils board.ReplyCancel
