How to Make Foaming Hand Soap

This foaming hand soap is so easy to make! With just a couple ingredients needed for it – water, castile soap and essential oils (which are optional), it can be made in just a few minutes.

In my quest for trying to use better for us products around the house, along with my love for making my own beauty products, I decided to give hand soap a try! I actually wanted to come up with a recipe for regular liquid soap, rather than foaming hand soap. I had regular soap dispensers I liked and I didn’t like the foaming soap dispensers I saw at the store – ha! But it seems like most of the regular liquid soap recipes have some sort of issue (like being too liquid-y).

After finally finding some cute foaming soap dispensers while I was looking for things online, I thought I’d give foaming hand soap a try. (I always appreciate nice packaging, and think all the little details add up to making a space feel and look nice. So it’s just a little thing I spend time on/think about).

This foaming hand soap is SO easy to make! With just a couple ingredients needed for it – water, castile soap and essential oils, it can be made in just a few minutes. You can pretty much use whatever essential oils you’d like as far as scent goes. Or you don’t even have to add them in – but I love how they make the soap smell, as well as the extra benefits for helping support healthier skin.

Essential oils to use for skin support:

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Patchouli
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Clary Sage
  • Chamomile
  • Geranium
  • Thieves
  • Tea Tree

I used Lavender and Patchouli for this batch.

I use a lot of Young Living essential oils and have always appreciated their quality and scents. However they are very expensive, and I’ve found that Plant Therapy essential oils have been pretty on par as far as quality and scents, and are much cheaper!

Supplies:

  • 8 ounces distilled water
  • 2 tablespoons castile soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Liquid Soap – I found it cheapest at Marshalls, but it’s also available at Target & Amazon)
  • 10-15 drops essential oil
  • foaming soap dispenser (the one in these photos is no longer available, but I also like this, this and this)
  • label

Directions:

Add the water to your soap dispenser (you’ll want to add this first or you could end up with lots o’ suds). Add in castile soap and essential oils. Gently swirl/shake the bottle to mix.

*depending on the size of your bottle, you may need to use less of the ingredients, you just want to make sure there’s a little bit of space between the inside pump mechanism and your liquid.
