DIY Wooden Comb

DIY Wooden Comb @themerrythoughtIf you have any small pieces of hardwood from any past projects you’ve done, this project is the perfect way to use them up! I’ve read a few articles recently about  combs helping to keep your hair healthier (they’re gentler than burshes and help evenly distribute natural oils throughout your hair) and it inspired me to try to make my own!
DIY Wooden Comb @themerrythoughtWhat you need:
-Hardwood (3/8″ – 1/2″ thick)
-Pencil
-Tape Measure
-Scroll Saw
-Belt Sander
-Sandpaper (Several grades, coarse to fine)
-Grapeseed Oil

How to make it:
-Draw out the outline of your comb. Make a line to mark the end of the saw cuts and then measure out the spaces for the teeth. (If you want 1/8″ teeth and 1/8″ spaces, make a line every 3/16″.) Remember, teeth should follow the grain of the wood.
-I didn’t want to risk cutting my fingers off trying to figure out how to do this on a tablesaw, so I used a scroll saw to cut out the main shape and then and made cuts 1/16″ from each side of the lines made for the teeth. Which should leave you with a 1/8″ space.
-Use the belt sander to taper the teeth of the comb and round out the top.
-Use medium-coarse sandpaper to smooth out the comb and in between and around all of the teeth and then repeat with a finer sandpaper. This part will take a while.
-I finished my comb with grapeseed oil because it’s good for the wood and good for your skin!
