DIY Canvas Wall Pockets

DIY Canvas Wall Pockets @themerrythoughtIt’s great when you can find projects to tackle that add to a bit of character to your decor that are also useful in every day life. These canvas & leather wall pockets require a bit of basic sewing skills, but they’re a great way to organize your office or add some extra storage for books and magazines near your bed or couch!
DIY Canvas Wall Pockets @themerrythoughtMaterials Needed:
-canvas drop cloth
-tape measure
-pencil
-scissors
-iron
-straight pins
-sewing machine
-leather or faux-leather vinyl
-1.5″ d-rings

Directions:

-Measure, mark, and cut out one 11″x34″ piece of canvas and three one 13″x9″ pieces of canvas.
-Fold in and iron 1/2″ along the long sides of the large piece of canvas.
-Fold in and iron 1/2″ along one of the 13″ sides of each of the three smaller pieces of canvas.
-Straight stitch along the seam of each of the sides that you ironed. (5 sides total.)
-Take the top of the large piece of canvas and fold down 1″ and iron in place. fold another 1″ down (so the raw edge is hidden.) and iron in place. Repeat the same steps with the bottom of the large piece of canvas. Straight stitch along the inside seams to hold in place.
-Take a 9″ sides of one of the three smaller pieces of canvas and fold it accordion style three time and iron in place. Each fold should be about 1/2″. Fold in toward the back first, then flip and fold on the other side, then flip towards the back for the final fold. Repeat with all of the 9″ sides of the small pieces.
-Pin the bottom fold of each side to the large piece of canvas. (Make sure that the 13″ side that you already stitched in facing up. This will be the top of each pocket.) They should be about 1/2″ in from the sides and about 1″ space in between each pocket. The bottom pocket is about 1.5″ up from the bottom of the canvas. Straight stitch the pockets in place.
-Straight stitch across the open bottom of each pocket.
-Measure, mark, and cut out one 10″ x 2.5″ piece of leather and two 1.5″x8″ pieces of leather. Wrap the large piece of leather around the bottom of the canvas and pin in place.
-Straight stitch across the top to secure. Make sure that you are stitching through the leather on the backside of the canvas as well.
-Take one of the 8″ pieces of leather and fold in half. Slip the leather around a d-ring. Put the top of the canvas in-between the ends of the leather and pin in place – about .75″ in from the side. and about 1″ down from the top. Stitch an “x” or a square to secure. Make sure that you are stitching through the leather on the backside of the canvas as well.
